Make a Dancing Lumberjack
Materials
dancing lumberjack pattern
small paper clips
1 large paperclip
1 wire
1 straw
4 washers
1 masonite board to dance the lumberjack on
2 paper fasteners
Instructions
1. Gather the following items before you begin.
- scissors
- glue
- masking tape
- old newspapers to cover your work area
2.
Familiarize yourself with the parts you will be cutting out. Notice that
each piece has an exact match except the two hat parts. Cut out all of the
pieces. Put matching pieces together to make little
"sandwiches". You should have eight sandwiches. All of the
writing should be hidden inside the sandwich. Use paperclips to hold the
sandwiches together temporarily so that no pieces are lost.
3. Lay out the body part "sandwiches" to get an idea
of how the finished dancing lumberjack will work.
4. If you want to draw a face or color your dancing lumberjack,
now is the time to do that.
5. Each "sandwich" will be
glued together with the indicated objects (washers, paperclips or straw)
inside. The circles on the boots represent washers. They help keep the
boots weighted. Paperclips are used to attach parts; such as the legs to
the body. A straw, in which there will be a
wire that the swinging arms are attached to, goes horizontally through the body
. Let's start with the boots.

6. Now assemble the rest of the lumberjack from the head down.
Glue together the head sandwich.
7. Put the wire through the straw and bend each end.
Make the bends far enough away from the straw so that the wire turns
freely. This mechanism allows the arms to swing around.

8a. To make a handle to hold the lumberjack, bend the large paperclip like this:

8b. Then make a 90 degree angle so that the long straight part points
straight up when the other part is balanced on the table.

8c. Stick this
straight part through the place indicated on the back part of the body
sandwich. Tape the curved part in place where indicated. The body sort of
sits up now because of that wire going to the back.

9. Tape the straw into place.

10. Glue together the body sandwich.

11. Attach one of the small paperclips to each of the paperclips
sticking out at the bottom of the body. Glue together the upper leg
sandwiches with the dangling paperclips inside.

12. Glue together the arm sandwiches and attach them to the wires
coming out of the straws. The wires should point straight down and his
arms should gently rest on the table.

13. The hat is optional.

14. After the glue is thoroughly dry, take off all the paperclips that
were holding it. Attach the boots to the legs with the paper fasteners.

Playing the Dancing Lumberjack
Sit in a chair with the masonite board partially under you. Hold your
dancing lumberjack in one hand with the boots barely touching the board.
Gently thump the board with your other hand to make him dance. It's fun to
sing a song and let him dance to it.
